Simon Chainsaw has been a figure on the WORLD alternative music scene for over 15 years. He gained his first notoriety when his band Vanilla Chainsaws were polled the BEST UNRECORDED BAND in Rock Australia Magazine's readers poll......after just 4 months together. The bands 1st 2 singles (on Phantom Records)"T.S.(was it really me)" and "like you" both written by Simon charted at 1 & 2 receptively on the alternative singles charts. The groups 3rd release the "wine Dark Sea" miniLP featuring Simon writing in collaboration with the other band members received considerable radio airplay and hit the No.3 spot on the alternative album charts. Simon and the group were quickly signed by Glitterhouse Records (Germany)who at the time carried artists Soundgarden and Nirvana among others. Glitterhouse released a compilation of the bands 7"s and the miniLP, and as the hard melodic nature of his songs were in high demand 3 bonus tracks penned by Simon were made available on the album. His songs were featured on fanzine 7" and flexi singles and another miniLP of Drew and Drew/collaboration songs was recorded and released. (featuring Bill Walsh of Cosmic Psychos on drums)
After a 2 year stint playing in USA, UK, and Europe Simon and guitarist Mark Alexander returned home, reunited with Phantom Records and released the RED LIGHTS miniLP. The title track, again written by Simon, quickly gained radio airplay, was featured on surfing Videos and found it's way to commercial television.....just around that time Polygram publishing Australia signed Simon and his band. Over the following 3 years due to recording/manufacturing delays only 2 CD's "watching Me" and "the worst place in the world" surfaced. A prolific songwriter and frustrated by the delays, Simon kept active by constantly demoing and forming side projects, including:
The Chernobyl Babies featured ex members of some of Australia's most popular bands (New Christs, Screaming Tribesmen, Hitmen, Trilobites and a young pre-You Am I Andy Kent), and kept his hard edged rock'n'roll writing sharp. A collaboration with ex Celibate Rifles bassplayer Rudy Morabito explored his darkside in "under the gun" and as Chainsaw Motherf@#er MC he teamed up with the Celestial Panelvan to produce a very "tongue in cheek" Barry White meets Ice T's Bodycount style affair which quickly became a cult item in Sydney's inner city scene.
After the Vanilla Chainsaws dissolved he withdrew from the music scene and spent the following few years travelling through the Asian, Indian and Sth American subcontinents. Later armed with a renewed perspective he returned as Simon Chainsaw (a nickname from his Vanilla Chainsaws days that stuck) and formed the Chainsaw Men with Steve Gardner (GAMMA MEN, NOISE FOR HEROES Fanzine/Website) on drums and recorded their 1st CD "ELECTRIC JUJU" in Feb 1999. An album described as "criminally underrated" by i94bar.com main man Craig Reagan.
He kept busy in 1999 doing acoustic performances in Japan, USA, France and Brazil. Simon also recorded in France and Germany for the BADASS ROADSHOW disc, featuring New Christs Al Creed on lead guitar, Stefane from french rockers Turbolove, and the rhythm section from New Yorker Sonny Vincent's live German group of that time....
Spending more and more time in Brazil he recorded the "BASTA" CD with the help of Sao Paulo's FORGOTTEN BOYS, and "TOLD ME A LIE" with the HIPPY KILLERS. Another project recorded in Germany called "ROCK'N'ROLL URANUS" is due to be released in 2005. It's a high energy punk disc with Simon's charactaristic melody and cutting edge solos.
Simon is also featured on a number of compilation discs from all around the world (Japan, Brazil, France etc etc etc) Check out the DISCOGRAPHY page for more info.
Continued interest in the Vanilla Chainsaws in Brazil has seen the band picked up for a 32 track double CD compilation "best of, rarities, unreleased" thru TronadorMusic OUT NOW!!!!.
